A Few Small Hops for Molly J

Upon returning from a few hours away, I turned the key, unlocked, and opened the door. What I saw there made me so happy. It wasn’t just one waggily pup, but two! Instead of welcoming me home from her comfy bed on the living room floor, Molly J joined her pup sister Cece at the door. It was just a few small hops for Molly J, but one giant leap for recovery!

But it didn’t stop there, oh no! After breakfast this morning, Molly J was feeling so good that she put her foot on her rope, which had been untouched for a couple of weeks. She turned her face toward me and made her request for me to play with her. We tugged. We spun. We fetched. We wagged. We only played for a few minutes, so she wouldn’t overdo it. But, how wonderful it was to see a glimpse of the playful, energetic Wonderpup I knew was still in there!

12 days post amp and moving on…

Renewing a Sense of Normalcy

20140712_090440
Over the last couple of days, I have reconsidered where Molly J is in her recovery as well as where I am in my protection of my girl. She had begun an anti-drug campaign a few days ago. At the beginning, she was all like, “Drugs are great! Drugs are neat! Now I only have 3 feet!” Then she decided she wanted to just say, “No,” to the meds which have been necessary to her recovery.
At the same time, she also decided she wasn’t very hungry. So, of course, I went against the advice and handfed her some of her favorite things: baked chicken, grilled steak, peanut butter, etc… i wanted to make sure she had something in her tummy to buffer all the meds she didn’t want. But she wouldn’t eat the kibble in her bowl. She would walk by it on her way back to her comfy bed in the living room.
Molly J is usually outside for a good part of the day. But, these past 2 weeks, since her tumor erupted and her leg was removed, I’ve kept her inside much more. I wanted to supervise and make sure she wasn’t being taken advantage of by bugs outside.
Considering all of these things, I came to the conclusion that my sweet girl just wanted to feel normal again. So, now that her incision is pretty well closed, we spent most of yesterday outside. She perked up after an afternoon on Neighborhood Watch. She basked in the sun, retired to the shade of the rhododendron when warm, and barked at the chickens next door. It was a good day. And as a bonus, my car is now cleaned and detailed. I don’t remember the last time it looked so good.
To make it even better, she decided that she was hungry! I heated up some of the soup I made the night before, and added it to a bit of her regular food. (This is something we started when she had surgery in April to debulk a tumor.) She ate it all! And, she took her meds with no refusals! I believe her normal day outside was to credit.
Day 10 post amp and counting…

1 week on 3 legs

20140708_131110

Molly J, Wonderpup, is working on her positive attitude. She has always been an upbeat pup, going on 13 years. But, a week ago, she came home on 3 legs, after we decided that a 2nd tumor debulking surgery wouldn’t  be beneficial.

I suppose the drugs from surgery helped her to feel like she could move around as she always had: full speed ahead. She slowed down as she came down from them and adapted to all the meds she’s been getting at home. She had a couple of full days of drainage from the incision. Let me shout out a big, “EEEEEWWWWWWW!” for that. But after that mess, her bruising was much less. The sweet girl’s fever also broke after the emergency vet injected fluids beneath her skin.

These last few days have been slow, but seemingly less painful. She’s been enjoying some sunshine, shade, and porch time a few times a day. It’s been so heartwarming to see her wagging her tail more, offer more kisses, and seem more alert. I know it’s still a long and probably bumpy road ahead, but we’re determined.

This week would have been so much more difficult without the Tripawd community supporting, encouraging, and sharing.  Thanks to you all!
